An attack on a military parade in Iran Saturday that left 25 people dead and more than 60 wounded was condemned by U.S. officials as an act of terrorism.
The Associated Press reported that officials also expressed support for “the Iranian people” following the attack, for which an Arab separatist group has claimed credit.
State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert says, per the AP: “We stand with the Iranian people against the scourge of radical Islamic terrorism and express our sympathy to them at this terrible time.”
The Saturday morning attack was reportedly carried out by gunmen disguised as soldiers, who shot into soldiers and the crowd watching the annual military parade in the city of Ahvaz. The group believed to be behind the attack, which the AP said was the deadliest terror attack in nearly a decade, reportedly wants the area near the southwest city to be its own country.
U.S. officials said “the United States condemns all acts of terrorism and the loss of any innocent lives,” per the AP.
