A former campaign consultant for D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray will be sentenced in September for his role in a plot to help Gray topple the sitting mayor in the 2010 election.
Howard Brooks will appear in court on Sept. 24 after pleading guilty to lying to federal agents. He faces up to five years in prison, though under federal sentencing guidelines his sentence will likely be far less severe.
Brooks was charged after fringe mayoral candidate Sulaimon Brown claimed he had been paid during the 2010 election and promised a position in the Gray administration if he stayed in the race and criticized incumbent Mayor Adrian Fenty.
These allegations prompted a grand jury probe, which led to charges against Brooks and the campaign’s assistant treasurer Thomas Gore.
Gore was charged with felony obstructing justice and three misdemeanor violations of District campaign finance law.
