Police have arrested a male juvenile who they suspect shot at least four people at a high school in Newport News, Virginia.
Students were evacuated to the school’s tennis courts after the shooting occurred. The four injured victims suffered gunshot wounds that are not believed to be life-threatening, the Newport News Police Department said. Two of the victims were 17-year-old students.
“There have been reports that there are active shooters at other schools in the city,” NNPD said earlier. “That information is false.”
Gov. Ralph Northam said on Twitter that he is in close contact with the first responders on the scene and reminded Virginia residents to avoid the area and follow all instructions from law enforcement.

Police are still investigating the incident. Details on the shooter, aside from saying he’s a male juvenile, have not been released.
Police Chief Steve Drew gave his thanks to the officers and the local and federal public safety partners for their assistance in the quick apprehension of the suspect. He also thanked Newport News Public Schools and the community for their assistance, the NNPD’s update read.
