Senate panel punts consideration of Noel Francisco’s solicitor general nomination to next week

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday punted the nomination of President Trump’s pick for solicitor general, Noel Francisco, until they return from their week-long Memorial Day recess at the request of Democrats.

Francisco has served in the role of principal deputy solicitor general in 2017 and previously worked at global law firm Jones Day in its government relations practice. He served as an associate counsel to President George W. Bush from 2003 to 2005.

In the role of solicitor general, Francisco would have the responsibility of conducting and supervising the government’s litigation at the Supreme Court. With litigation surrounding President Trump’s travel ban pending before multiple federal appeals courts, Francisco could become immersed in the new gig just as the controversial ban arrives at the high court.
