House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said all of the attacks against her from inside and outside of the Democratic Party is nothing to “make a big fuss over” and that she can “take the heat.”
“I have a following in the country that’s unsurpassed by anybody, unless they’re running for president,” Pelosi told the Associated Press in an interview.
Pelosi said she wants to be a role model for women not to run away from a fight.
“It’s immodest of me to say, but I say to women now, ‘Just go for it.’ Tell them why you think you’re the best person to do this job,” Pelosi said. “I want to be an example to them, just to say, ‘Don’t run away from a fight.’ If you think you’re the one that should be there, you make the fight.”
The leader said she could not envision any other Democrat being able to take her position and sit across from President Trump in negotiations.
Several Democratic candidates have confirmed that they would not support Pelosi should she run for leader again, and many lawmakers have said the same.
“This is not anything to make a big fuss over, it’s politics,” Pelosi said. “I can take the heat and that’s why I stay in the kitchen.”
