Patrick Leahy, senator picked to preside over Trump impeachment trial, taken to hospital

Patrick Leahy, the 80-year-old senator picked to preside over former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial, was taken to the hospital on Tuesday for observation after “not feeling well,” according to his office.

“This evening, Senator Leahy was in his Capitol office and was not feeling well,” spokesman David Carle said. “He was examined in the Capitol by the Attending Physician. Out of an abundance of caution, the Attending Physician recommended that he be taken to a local hospital for observation, where he is now, and where he is being evaluated.”

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Leahy, a Democrat from Vermont, was expected to preside over Trump’s impeachment trial, set to begin Feb. 9.

He was picked, according to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, because Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts decided he would not preside over a trial of someone no longer in office.

Leahy’s spokesman said Tuesday night that Leahy returned home from the hospital and “looks forward to getting back to work.”

“After getting test results back, and after a thorough examination, Senator Leahy now is home. He looks forward to getting back to work,” the spokesman said. “Patrick and Marcelle deeply appreciate the well wishes they have received tonight.
