Anne Arundel County is closing down parts of Bear Neck Creek in Edgewater after a wastewater treatment plant dumped treated sewage into the creek.
Swimming, water skiing or any contact with the water of Bear Neck Creek between its headwaters to White Marsh Creek is prohibited, county officials said.
If contact is made with the contaminated water, people should immediately wash with warm water and soap.
Signs have been posted with the warnings, and county officials are testing the water.
The wastewater overflow came from the Mayo treatment plant, and most of the water had already been treated.
