A number of organizations are offering classes to illegal immigrants in the U.S., hoping to help them avoid being deported if President Trump follows through on promises to enforce immigration laws.
Some of those groups’ “know your rights” sessions — including some by the National Day Laborer Organizing Network and Make the Road — advise illegal aliens not to open the front door if Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers show up, and neither to sign their name on any federal immigration documents nor share one’s name if taken into custody.
One such training in Queens, N.Y., included a woman dressed up as an ICE agent banging on a door then busting into the room, according to the Associated Press.
Advocacy organizations say aliens have “constitutional rights” despite being in the U.S. illegally. The most recurring advice was to push back against Trump’s enforcing long-standing immigration policies by not cooperating with law enforcement officers, who are carrying out federal law.
