A new poll shows that most voters either dislike or hate Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump about equally, the latest sign that the 2016 race is shaping up to be a fight between two of the most disliked candidates in history.

An NBC News/Survey Monkey tracking poll released Tuesday said 58 percent of voters either dislike or hate Clinton. Clinton’s “dislike” portion is 37 percent, while 21 percent “hate her.”

Trump’s numbers are slightly worse but in the same range. The survey said 39 percent dislike him, and 24 percent hate him, for a total of 63 percent of voters who don’t care for him.

On the other side of the coin, 40 percent of voters either admire or like Clinton, and 36 percent admire or like Trump.

The poll also gives Clinton a 4-point lead in a head-to-head matchup against Trump, 47-43. That’s roughly unchanged from last week’s poll, which put Clinton ahead of Trump 48-45.

The poll also found that about a third of both Clinton and Trump supporters said the most important reason they support their candidate is opposition to the other candidate. Thirty-three percent said they support Clinton because they oppose Trump, and 36 percent of Trump supporters said they are opposing Clinton.

The online poll was conducted May 16-22, surveying a national sample of 16,710 adults, of which 14,513 are registered voters. The overall margin of error is plus or minus 1 percentage point.
