Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof will avoid second death sentence with guilty plea

The man who shot nine black worshippers in a Charleston, S.C., church in 2015 will plead guilty to state charges in order to avoid another death sentence.

The Associated Press reported Dylann Roof, already convicted of murder and sentenced to death in federal court, is expected to plead guilty next month to state murder charges. In exchange for his plea, he’ll be sentenced to life in prison for the state crimes.

Roof has already been sentenced to death for shooting nine people in June 2015 at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston.

He’ll now be transferred to federal custody, according to the report.
