Stay away from Interstate 66 this weekend, officials warn.
Crews will close multiple lanes of the Northern Virginia highway from 9 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for demolition, excavation and paving to prepare for the opening of the Beltway Express Lanes.
One lanes on each exit ramp from Interstate 495 to I-66 west will also be closed Friday night to Sunday night, Virginia Department of Transportation officials warned.
“Motorists can expect 30-minute delays and are strongly urged to use an alternate route during the weekend construction,” the agency said in a statement.
The express lanes, which will charge a toll in exchange for a less-congested route, are due to open in December. They will be free for carpoolers.
