White House mistakenly calls China, not Taiwan, ‘the Republic of China’

The White House mistakenly called China “the Republic of China” in a press release Saturday.

Taiwan is the Republic of China. China is the People’s Republic of China.

The press release detailed President Trump’s remarks to Chinese President Xi Jinping at a bilateral meeting at the G-20 summit.

Taiwan has, at different points in history, been held by China and Japan. China does not recognize the sovereignty of Taiwan’s government and officially supports the One-China policy in which Taiwan is a part of mainland China. The U.S. recognizes the One-China policy as well.
