Warren on ‘Pocahontas’ barbs: ‘I can’t stop Donald Trump’

SIOUX CITY, Iowa Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., told voters Saturday morning that she is “not a person of color” when confronted about her decision to prove her claims of Native American ancestry through a DNA test.

After a voter asked why Warren did so and, in effect, gave more fodder to President Trump on the issue. Most recently, Trump tweeted out a faux bumper sticker making fun of Warren on the issue.

“I am not a person of color,” Warren said. “I am not a citizen of a tribe. Tribal citizenship is very different from ancestry. Tribes, and only tribes, determine tribal citizenship, and I respect that difference.”

“My decision was to put it all out there,” Warren said of the pre-midterm election announcement, which showed “strong evidence” of Native American ancestry.

The Massachusetts Democrat then turned to the attacks from Trump, which he has commented on since his 2016 campaign and repeatedly referred to her as “Pocahontas.”

“I can’t stop Donald Trump from what he’s going to do,” Warren said. “I can’t stop him from hurling racial insults. I don’t have any power to do that.”

“Yes, you can!” one attendee responded to applause.
