Everyman presents Wilson?s ‘Gem’

Everyman Theatre in Baltimore is currently performing August Wilson?s “Gem of the Ocean” through April 27.

The ninth play in Wilson?s 10-play series chronicling the black experience in the 20th century, “Gem of the Ocean” introduces Citizen Barlow, a young man who appears on the steps of his Aunt Ester?s house on the eve of her 287th birthday. In her mystic role as healer and oracle, Aunt Ester sends Barlow to find a magical city in the middle of the ocean, thus beginning his journey of spiritual discovery and redemption. Set in 1904 after the collapse of slavery, the drama blends history and myth to tell this compelling story.

Directed by Jennifer L. Nelson, “Gem of the Ocean” features an experienced cast, including Everyman resident company members Dawn Ursula, Lizan Mitchell, Jefferson A. Russell and Keith N. Johnson.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, and 7 p.m. Sundays. Everyman Theatre is located at 1727 N. Charles St. in Baltimore. Tickets for the show are $18 to $35.
