The White House threw some shade at Donald Trump Wednesday by poking fun at how close, and yet how far, Trump’s new hotel in Washington, D.C. is from the White House.
“In some ways, it’s a really long way depending on how you look at it,” presidential press secretary Josh Earnest said a reporter mentioned how close the hotel is to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Earnest apparently was referring to the 4 to 10 point lag Trump has seen in some of the recent polls in his race against Hillary Clinton.
Trump spent Wednesday morning formally opening the new hotel in Washington, D.C., an overhaul of the Old Post Office building. The hotel has reportedly struggled to fill rooms amid his divisive presidential bid.
In his remarks during the opening, Trump acknowledged no problems and focused on the positive — that the project came in “under budget and ahead of schedule.”
“So important. We don’t hear those words so often, but you will,” said Trump, in apparent comparison to his plans for the White House. “Today is a metaphor for what we can accomplish for this country.”
