“Waiting for ‘Superman'” wins Best Documentary award

Waiting for ‘Superman'” was named the year’s best documentary by the National Board of Review.

The docu-drama, directed by “An Inconvenient Truth”‘s Davis Guggenheim, followed five children through the troubled American public school system.

Its depiction of then-D.C. schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee and her aggressive school reforms painted D.C. as a model of progress, stunted only by the teachers’ union — a conclusion that incensed the American Federation of Teachers.

The National Board of Review’s voting members are generally anonymous, but include HBO documentarian Sheila Nevins, book publisher Ross Claiborne and Student Academy Award winner Luke Matheny. A gala will be held Jan. 11 to honor the winners, which include “The Social Network” for Best Film.
