The Republican National Committee has adopted President Trump’s “witch hunt” terminology to describe the sexual misconduct allegations leveled at Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
“Judge Kavanaugh has become the victim of a televised witch hunt playing out in front of his own family,” the RNC wrote in an email on behalf of “Trump Headquarters” soliciting signatures for a petition in support of the judge. “Democrats only want to smear this man because he was nominated by President Trump.”
Trump has used the phrase “witch hunt” to belittle special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. The former FBI director has indicted or obtained guilty pleas from 32 people and three companies since May 2017.
Kavanaugh has been accused by two women of sexual misconduct dating back to the 1980s. A third accuser came forward Wednesday in a sworn statement to claim the judge behaved inappropriately toward women as a teenager, including spiking their drinks and touching them without their consent. He has denied all the allegations.
“President Trump told you back in July that Democrats would get nasty to sabotage our Supreme Court nominee,” the RNC’s email continues. “They did it to Justice Clarence Thomas. They did it to Judge Robert Bork. Now it’s happening again. But this time, the American people must fight back, or it will only get worse.”
Kavanaugh is expected to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday to address the claim made by his first accuser, Christine Blasey Ford. The panel’s schedule says its vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination could be as early as Friday.
