Fairfax voters to decide Va. senator Tuesday

Fairfax County voters will decide the successor to Attorney General-elect Ken Cuccinelli in the Virginia Senate on Tuesday. The 37th District special election pits former Fairfax County School Board member Steve Hunt, a Republican, against Del. Dave Marsden, a Democrat who represents an overlapping House of Delegates district. Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

The low-turnout election will determine the size of Democrats’ slim majority in the upper chamber. The district — which encompasses a swath of western Fairfax — swung Republican in the November elections but had shifted Democratic in prior contests since 2004. – William C. Flook
