Outgoing Secret Service director ridiculed as ‘Dumbo’ by Trump

President Trump had reportedly used the moniker “Dumbo” when referring to Secret Service Director Randolph Alles, who is departing from the role, because of the size of his ears.

The New York Times reports Alles was told to step aside and come up with an exit plan for his departure 10 days ago. Trump reportedly became dissatisfied by Alles, nicknamed “Tex,” and had referred to the former Marine Corps major general as the animated character in the 1941 Walt Disney Productions children’s movie “Dumbo.” The character is an elephant who is ridiculed for his intellect and large ears, which allow him to fly.

It was initially reported that Alles was abruptly fired Monday, but Alles said in a statement to the Washington Examiner the characterization was inaccurate.

“No doubt you have seen media reports regarding my ‘firing.’ I assure you that this is not the case, and in fact was told weeks ago by the Administration that transitions in leadership should be expected across the Department of Homeland Security. The President has directed an orderly transition in leadership for this agency and I intend to abide by that direction,” Alles said.

Alles’ departure came on the heels of former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen submitting her resignation on Sunday. Trump announced her departure in a tweet after a heated meeting and before Nielsen had time to send out a resignation letter herself.

Amid the shakeup, the Times also reports two other figures are expected to leave the White House soon: L. Francis Cissna, the head of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, and John Mitnick, a senior member of Nielsen’s team.

After his Monday departure, Trump named James Murray as Alles’ replacement.
