President Trump called former FBI Director James Comey “a showboat” Thursday in his first major network news interview since abruptly firing him two days earlier.

“He’s a showboat, he’s a grandstander, the FBI has been in turmoil,” Trump told NBC News. “You know that, I know that, everybody knows that. You take a look at the FBI a year ago, it was in virtual turmoil, less than a year ago. It hasn’t recovered from that.”
Trump said he’d already decided to fire Comey before a recommendation to do so from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, which the White House had said prompted the decision.
“What I did is, I was going to fire Comey, my decision,” Trump said. “I was going to fire Comey.”
