Libya destroys remaining chemical weapons

The international organization responsible for monitoring chemical weapons reported on Thursday that Libya has removed the last of its illicit stash.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said that 500 metric tons of chemical weapons and their precursor ingredients were destroyed.

The coalition of former opposition forces known as the Libyan Government of National Accord that took control of Libya after strongman Muammar Qaddafi’s death asked the international community to help it destroy his stockpile.

National Security Council spokesman Ned Price thanked the international body and Denmark specifically for providing the ships that hauled the materials away. Additionally Price mentioned Canada, Finland, Germany and the United Kingdom for their contributions.
