N. Minnieville Road widening set for approval

Some 19,000 drivers a day will benefit from a widened Minnieville Road between Old Bridge and Caton Hill roads.

Prince William County supervisors are expected to approve more than $15.1 million to fund the project today at their regular board meeting. The project will widen the two-lane, more than two-mile stretch of road to a four-lane, divided highway with turning lanes and traffic lights where necessary, said Tom Blaser, transportation chief for the county.

The widening project was removed from the Virginia Department of Transportation’s construction plans in 2002, Blaser said. The county provided funding for it through the 2002 road bond.

“It took a little longer than we anticipated due to the number of properties we had to acquire, as well as some re-engineering. Now the project is good to go and it is long overdue,” said Sean Connaughton, Prince William County Board of Supervisors chairman.

“It has been one delay after another. The utilities have now been relocated and … we should start seeing some dirt move later this summer,” said Supervisor Corey Stewart, R-Occoquan.
