High season for deer collisions is here, and Maryland ranks 16th in the nation in traffic crashes involving rutting ruminants.

According to State Farm?s annual claim statistics, Maryland ranked 16th among the states, with 5,194 deer-related accident claims between July 1, 2005, and June 30, 2006.

State Farm advises keeping alert when driving in the dawn and dusk hours, when deer tend to be on the move, and to keep the bright lights on whenever possible to highlight any pale brown creatures skulking at the edge of the roadway.

Deer often travel in groups, so if you see one, more are almost guaranteed to be in the bushes nearby, State Farm advised. And fancy deer-whistles do nothing to deter the animals.
