Metro riders were stuck in a commuting nightmare Thursday morning after a fire at Metro Center station caused the Red Line to be stopped between Gallery Place and Dupont Circle.
The problem started about 7:30 a.m. when Metro announced “fire department activity” at Metro Center was taking place and train service was being suspended between Gallery Place and Dupont Circle. That stretch of the Red Line is one of the busiest commuter sections in the district.
While some train service was restored before 9 a.m. Thursday, trains were still single-tracking and delays were expected.
Shuttle buses were helping commuters move between the stations, but Metro encouraged riders to take buses or walk to stops that avoided the Red Line in order to get to their destination.
