Donald Trump has said that campaign spouses should not be included in attacks between candidates, but declared Sunday that rule does not apply to former President Bill Clinton.
“If he’s involved in the campaign, he shouldn’t be [off the table],” Trump on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday morning. “He gets involved when she plays the women’s card. When she says Donald Trump was nasty to a woman … if he’s involved in the campaign, he should absolutely, he could be brought into it.”
The GOP presidenital front-runner’s comments to host George Stephanopoulos came the day after he attacked the 42nd president’s history with women at a rally in Washington state. He called Bill Clinton “the worst abuser in the history of politics.” The presumptive GOP nominee also accused Hillary Clinton of being an “enabler” to her husband’s behavior.
Voters rarely hear from Trump’s wife Melania, although she often accompanies him to rallies and other such campaign events. Melania Trump came into the national spotlight in March when Trump retweeted a photo of her along with an unflattering photo of Heidi Cruz, the wife of his former opponent Ted Cruz.
In the aftermath of that tweet, Trump conceded that candidate’s spouses should be kept out of the political limelight.
But, he believes Bill Clinton should be viewed differently. The business mogul claimed he has a much better record treating women fairly. Trump said Bill Clinton only gets involved in the 2016 campaign when Hillary Clinton feels threatened.
“Hillary, she’s a baby,” Trump said.
“He gets involved when she plays the women’s card. When she says Donald Trump was nasty to a woman,” Trump said. “Number one, I have worked so well with women for so many years. I broke — you talk about the glass ceiling. What I have done in terms of jobs for women. To this day, I have so many women in my company doing so well, making so much money.”
He offered no specifics on the women he has helped.
Trump said insulting Bill Clinton is “fair game.”
