Saturday Night Live stars Pete Davidson and Colin Jost buy Staten Island Ferry

Pete Davidson and company are looking to have boatloads of fun.

The Saturday Night Live star got together with fellow cast member Colin Jost and their business partner, comedy club owner Paul Italia, to purchase a Staten Island Ferry named the John F. Kennedy for $280,100.

“Right now, we’re going to dock it in, I think, Gowanus, and do a bunch of work on it,” Davidson, who is from Staten Island, told the New York Post. The trio intends to turn the ferry into a floating event space, Italia told the news outlet.

The John F. Kennedy was put up for auction earlier this month. Italia bet his money on the ferry once it reached $140,000, according to the New York Times. Italia told the outlet each time he put up a bid for the boat, it would quickly be countered by another bid from an undisclosed rival. Eventually, Italia said he bid $280,100 and was able to purchase the ship.

The orange ferry was first commissioned in 1965, making it the oldest boat in the city’s fleet, according to the Department of Transportation, and was eventually retired in August 2021 before being put up for auction months later. Now that it has been purchased, the new owners have “about two weeks” to move it out of the St. George Ferry Terminal along the north shore of Staten Island.

Weighing more than 2,100 tons and measuring 77 feet long and 69 feet wide, the John F. Kennedy will need two tugboats to tow it away, according to Italia, who said it was “a heavy lift.” He also said it won’t be cheap to store the ferry while the trio determines its ultimate destination.
