How did you get into planning weddings?
It was a natural fit for me. It’s the fact that I have an interest in fashion, coupled with weddings. Put the two together — and it’s perfect.
What’s unique about weddings in D.C.?
It’s the range of weddings. It’s not very cookie-cutter. The economy didn’t take the same hit as in other areas. You can go south and have a wedding in a winery or vineyard or you can have a really posh five-star D.C. wedding as well. If someone wants to think out of the box, there are beautiful estate homes in Virginia you can go to. Couples are making the weddings very rustic — outdoor, at one with nature. But that’s not to discount beautiful, ballroom weddings.
Does a particular wedding stand out to you?
For me, the last wedding that I planned was held in an airplane hangar. We just transformed the venue into a really beautiful space — the Tipton Airport between D.C. and Baltimore. We had everything moved out.
Any horror stories?
At a bridal salon, I think the most difficult situation arrives when there’s a limited amount of time and a lot of stress. Personalities fly, and there are moments when it’s not the most enjoyable. I once had a mother call me, who begged for me to tell the bride that the gown wasn’t available. But they’re spending so much money on one day — having all their friends under one roof — they want to look their best. You can’t blame them.
How did “The Apprentice” prepare you for salon ownership?
Donald Trump likes passionate people. I had to prove myself and be aggressive. It sharpened who I am as a businesswoman and increased my confidence as an entrepreneur. It also helped me learn how to deflate situations.
