Rescuers save puppy kidnapped by monkey for three days

Rescuers in Malaysia retrieved a puppy that was kidnapped by a monkey for three days.

A picture was posted on Facebook of the monkey holding the puppy while standing atop utility lines on Sept. 15. Another image showed the monkey holding the dog three days later, with the white and black puppy apparently unharmed by his captor, according to a report.

A video went viral Saturday of a man encountering the monkey and puppy and attempting to use firecrackers to scare the monkey. Three other people were able to recover the puppy from the foliage after the monkey fled from the noise.

One of the rescuers, Francis Poh, said he thought the social media images of the monkey holding the dog were fake when he first saw them, Oriental Daily News reported.

Poh, who reportedly has years of experience in animal rescue, decided to step in when locals tried to bribe the monkey with fruit to release the puppy, he said.

“I hope everyone doesn’t blame the monkey because as we could see the monkey is trying her best to take care of the puppy,” Cherry Lew Yee Lee said in a Facebook post. “She is probably depressed and lonely since she’s the only monkey in that area.”

The dog was taken to the veterinarian, adopted, and named Saru, which means “monkey” in Japanese, Lee said.
