A gun rights advocate will not be allowed to speak at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School after publicly accepting an invitation from students.
Broward Schools spokeswoman Cathleen Brennan said Thursday that “non-school sponsored, student-initiated guest speaker assemblies/meetings are not permitted to take place on campus,” according to the Associated Press.
The gun rights advocate, Charlie Kirk, tweeted that he had accepted an invitation from students to speak at the school in Parkland, Fla., where in February a shooter killed 17 people.
Kirk founded Turning Point USA, a conservative nonprofit group that maintains a presence with chapters on over 1,000 college campuses throughout the nation.
A Stoneman Douglas student, Jaclyn Corin, responded to Kirk’s criticism of being denied the speaking opportunity by stating the campus was not welcoming “ANY politicization” at the moment.
Charlie, thank you for being interested in speaking at our school. However, you must understand that we aren’t having ANY politicization at MSD right now, left or right.

The Sun Sentinel reported that Kirk was invited by student Kyle Kashuv, whose sister, Alaina, was killed with 16 others during the shooting.
Kashuv told the outlet that students will meet Kirk off campus if necessary.
