Senate passes $1.1 billion in new Zika funding

The Senate voted Thursday to pass a provision that provides $1.1 billion in new federal funding to combat the Zika virus.

The bipartisan measure is an amendment to a Senate appropriations bill, and it passed 68-30.

Senate action came after the House on Wednesday passed its own Zika measure. The House bill does not designate any new funding, but rather re-directs to the Zika fight more than $622 million in existing federal funds. The two chambers must now reconcile the two measures.

Both plans fall short of the $1.9 billion in new funding the Obama administration requested in February to combat Zika.

The Obama Administration has already re-directed to Zika about $590 million in funds left over from the effort to eliminate Ebola.
