Dry conditions and gusty winds today could create the potential for rapid fire growth, according to the National Weather Service.
A red flag warning has been issued for the Washington area in effect from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today. The Weather Service issues the warning when critical fire weather conditions are occuring or will occur soon. Because of the conditions, uncontrolled brush or wildland fires could spread quickly, forecasters said.
In the Washington area, gusts could be as high as 34 mph today and high temperatures are expected to be in the upper 60s. Scattered showers are possible after 3 p.m., although the Weather Service predicts a 30-percent chance of precipitation and less than one-tenth of an inch of rain.
Tonight, showers are possible before midnight and the Weather Service again predicts less than one tenth of an inch of rainfall.
