Trump caps first foreign trip: ‘I think we hit a home run’

“We have been gone for close to nine days. This will be nine days,” Trump said during a speech before service members and their families at Naval Air Station Sigonella in Italy. “I think we hit a home run no matter where we are.”

First lady Melania Trump introduced her husband, and his speech closed out the Trump’s first foreign trip as commander in chief, which spanned nine days. Trump visited five countries, including Saudi Arabia, Israel, Belgium and Italy, and attended NATO and G7 summits.

During his address, the president reaffirmed his commitment to fighting terrorism and said he made “extraordinary gains” to “advance the security and prosperity of the United States, our friends and our allies.”

“We paved the way for a new era of cooperation among the nations of the world to defeat the common enemy of terrorism and provide our children with a much more hopeful future,” Trump said. “You’re going to have a great future because of your parents and other people in this room.”

Trump’s focus on terrorism was heightened after more than 22 people were killed in a terrorist attack in Manchester, England, on Monday and nearly 30 Coptic Christians were shot and killed by gunmen in Egypt on Friday.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for both attacks.

Trump met with British Prime Minister Theresa May during the trip and “expressed the absolute solidarity of the American people.”

“The barbaric attack in Manchester and the massacre of innocent young lives underscores the depth of evil we face and the urgent need for us to join forces to absolutely and totally defeat it,” the president said.

With Memorial Day on Monday, Trump also thanked the service members in attendance and reaffirmed his commitment to beefing up military spending, promising to buy the “planes, the ships, the vehicles and equipment you need to get your job done and come home safe and sound to your families.”

“You’re going to win,” he said. “You’re going to do a lot of winning.”
