BSO to cut five positions

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra has cut five positions to help balance its budget amid a difficult economy, the organization said Wednesday.

The jobs will come from the BSO’s marketing, finance, and development arms, said Eileen Andrews Jackson, vice-president of marketing and communications. A sixth individual was asked to work part-time instead of full-time.

The six positions affected are among 67 employees of the BSO. The cuts, along with other cost-saving moves, will save the BSO approximately $500,000.

“It’s a combination of those five full-time positions,” Jackson said, “and we are also imposing a moratorium on overtime where possibleÉand then not filling approximately a half-dozen positions that were budgeted for this year.”

The cuts come one month after the Baltimore Opera Company filed for bankruptcy, citing low ticket sales.
