Last night Barack Obama was interviewed by Major Garrett on Hannity and Colmes. Garrett asked Obama why Jeremiah Wright was placed on Obama’s African-American Religious Leadership Committee after Obama knew of at least one of Wright’s radical statements. Obama answered: “I knew about one or two statements that had been made. … If it was just a function of one or two statements, then that’s not something that would lead me to distance myself from either my church or my pastor.” Garrett didn’t ask Obama some obvious follow-up questions: Which statements did you hear, Senator Obama? That we live in the “U.S. of KKK A.”? “God damn America”? Is the number–rather than the content–of Wright’s racist and anti-American statements really what’s relevant here?
