House lawmakers on Tuesday quickly killed a second attempt by Democrats to launch an investigation into House Speaker Paul Ryan’s decision to fire, and then reinstate, the House chaplain.
Democrats charged that Ryan, R-Wis., moved to dump Father Patrick Conroy on his own, without any input from lawmakers and for unexplained reasons. Conroy said he believed he may have offered a prayer that subtly criticized the GOP tax cut bill, but Ryan rejected that and said he didn’t think Conroy was offering adequate pastoral services to lawmakers.
Ryan reinstated Conroy Tuesday and presided over his swearing-in on the House floor. But Democrats pushed again to pass a resolution calling for a formal investigation into why Ryan moved against Conroy.
But just like in late April, Republicans moved to table the language offered by Rep. Joe Crowley, D-N.Y., and that GOP motion passed 223-182.
In late April, the House voted 215-171 to kill the same Democratic resolution.
