‘Proud deplorable’: John Kennedy derides ‘avocado toast-eating insiders’ at Trump rally

Sen. John Kennedy called himself a proud “deplorable” while he ripped into Washington, D.C., “elite” during a rally for President Trump in Bossier City, Louisiana.

“I stand before you tonight as a proud deplorable, and unlike some of the folks in Washington, D.C., I’m talking about the cultured, cosmopolitan, goats milk latte-drinking, avocado toast-eating insiders elite,” the Louisiana Republican said Thursday. “As a deplorable, I believe that everybody counts. And I care about you, and so does the president of the United States of America.” Kennedy went on to rail against “crappy” Democrats.

While deriding elites, Kennedy attended Vanderbilt as an undergraduate student before getting his law degree at the University of Virginia School of Law and a bachelor of civil law degree at the prestigious Magdalen College at Oxford University in England. The college’s alumni include C.S. Lewis, T. E. Lawrence, Prince Chichibu of Japan, the former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, and King Edward VIII.

At a rally earlier this month, the senator told the crowd that “it must suck to be that dumb” when talking about Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Kennedy said he did not “mean any disrespect” to the California Democrat. The crowd booed Pelosi while Kennedy continued to slam Democrats trying to impeach Trump.

Kennedy, 67, is a fierce critic of Democrats and a staunch defender of the president. In July, he told the “Squad,” led by Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar, that they were “the reason that there are directions on a shampoo bottle.”

“They are entitled to their opinion. They are Americans. But I’m entitled to my opinion, and I just think they are left-wing cranks,” he added.

During the Thursday rally, Trump admitted that the House impeachment process has been “very, very hard” for his family.

“I have one problem. And it has been very hard on my family. Whoever heard — impeachment to me is a dirty word. It’s been very unfair, very hard on my family. Me, it’s my whole life, it’s crazy. What a life I lead. You think this is fun, don’t you? But it’s been very hard on my family. Very, very hard,” he said.
