CCBC wins national award

The Community College of Baltimore County has won the 2006 Award for Institutional Progress in Student Learning Outcomes.

The college, one of only four recognized and the only community college to receive the honor, was recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation for its work in measuring student learning outcomes.

Other colleges recognized were James Madison University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

This is the first in a series of annual national awards that CHEA plans to give to institutions that successfully evaluate and demonstrate student knowledge, skills and outcomes. The awards are designed to encourage schools nationwide to use new, effective and innovative systems to evaluate and demonstrate student outcomes and provide increasing accountability of that information to the public.

“Assessment lies at the very heart of a learning organization,” said Rose Mince, assistant to the vice chancellor for student learning and development at the Community College of Baltimore County. “Through assessment, we discover exactly what students are mastering and where improvement is needed.”
