GOP congressman calls for Comey and Strzok to be jailed citing unsubstantiated Overstock CEO claims

Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie urged the federal government to imprison former FBI Director James Comey and former FBI agent Peter Strzok citing unsubstantiated claims made by former Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne.

“The feds should let Maria Butina out of jail and put James Comey and Peter Strzok in her cell. If you watch anything today, watch this video,” the Kentucky Republican tweeted Friday, linking a video to a Fox News interview with Byrne.

Byrne, 57, claimed over the past few weeks that the FBI encouraged him to carry on a sexual relationship with Maria Butina, a Russian spy. The former CEO said FBI officials involved him in “political espionage” and a “deep state” investigation. He named Strzok and former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe as being involved along with officials at the top of the FBI.

The Fox News interview cited by Massie ended with Byrne stating, “You want to see a former director crap his pants — go stick a television camera on Peter Strzok or let’s just say James Comey and say the name Patrick Byrne. You will see a former director of the FBI crap his pants.”

Byrne resigned Thursday following a 30% plunge in the company’s share price.

“I believe that I did what was necessary for the good of the country, for the good of the firm, I am in the sad position of having to sever ties with Overstock, both as CEO and board member, effective Thursday Aug. 22,” he said in a statement.

Butina, 30, was the only Russian national arrested in conjunction with the investigation into whether the Russian government meddled in the 2016 election. She received an 18 month prison sentence in April.

Massie has stated he believes the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller was a waste of taxpayer dollars.

“The Mueller report states what was obvious from the start: President Trump is not guilty of collusion. This entire investigation was a waste of taxpayer dollars,” he said in March. “I now look forward to focusing on important legislative matters, such as decreasing our national debt, rolling back burdensome government mandates, improving infrastructure, ending fruitless foreign wars, and securing our border.”
