Anthem to appeal merger block

Anthem will appeal a federal court’s ruling that blocks the major insurer’s merger with Cigna.

A federal court blocked the deal late Wednesday, citing antitrust issues. The insurance giant and major Obamacare insurer said Thursday it was “significantly disappointed.”

“If not overturned, the consequences of the decision are far-reaching and will hurt American consumers by limiting their access to high quality affordable care,” CEO Joe Swedish said Thursday.

Anthem appears to remain committed to the deal, saying it will “work aggressively to complete the transaction.”

Anthem and Cigna aren’t the only insurers that have had trouble merging. A federal judge also blocked a proposed merger between Aetna and Humana, again citing antitrust issues.
