In wake of Hanna, VDOT closes Great Falls bridge

The Virginia Department of Transportation announced the temporary closure of a bridge in Great Falls that was damaged by Tropical Storm Hanna on Sept. 6.

The span, which carries Springvale Road over Piney Run, will be shut down for about four weeks as crews shore up support for the abutments underneath the structure, according to a VDOT news release.

The bridge sits close to the Springvale Woods community, north of Leesburg Pike.

VDOT will detour motorists onto Va.-7 west, right on Utterback Store Road, right on Georgetown Pike and back onto Springvale Drive.

The detour will add about 10 minutes of travel time.

The bridge was inspected this summer and found to be “in fair condition,” according to VDOT.
