Mo Brooks: ‘Terminate all federal government support of NFL’ for protests

Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., said the federal government should end any and all support to the NFL on Tuesday, following the uproar over players kneeling during the national anthem on Sunday.

“I believe we ought to terminate all federal government support of the NFL,” Brooks told Breitbart News after a “Conversations with Conservatives” event at the Capitol. “That would include the termination of any and all advertising that is done on behalf of the federal government — military and non-military — to the extent we do any.”

Brooks also argued support should end for “any other professional sport that insults our country and our flag and our anthem as the NFL has done.”

According to a CNN report in 2015, billions of dollars in subsidies are given to the NFL from taxpayers, but mostly on the local level as opposed to the federal level.

President Trump weighed in on the controversial NFL protests in a speech on Friday, saying “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. He is fired. He’s fired!” His comments sparked backlash from NFL players and coaches nationwide.

Over 200 NFL players sat or kneeled during the national anthem in protest this past weekend.
