One man was killed and eight people in the region have been hospitalized for carbon monoxide poisoning after using generators when their homes lost power during Hurricane Irene.

Officials in Prince George’s, Montgomery and Howard counties said people from three houses suffered carbon monoxide poisining when they used generators in enclosed areas like garages.

Howard County police said 48-year-old Won Koo Sung was found dead in his home on the 2700 block of Old Saint John’s Lane in Ellicot City late Monday night. His wife and son were taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Four people in Fort Washington were also hospitalized Monday night, when one family member called 911 to report that another person in the home on the 12400 block of Surrey Circle Drive was unconscious, according to Prince George’s County fire and emergency services. Four adults — two men and two women — were treated for carbon monoxide exposure. Authorities said a carbon monoxide detector found near-fatal levels of carbon monoxide in the home.

Earlier Monday, two elderly people were treated for carbon monoxide poisoning after a relative found them disoriented and unresponsive in their home on the 3000 block of Ferndale Street in Kensington.
