New Ted Cruz running mate Carly Fiorina fired back at former Speaker John Boehner Thursday after he called Cruz “Lucifer in the flesh” by saying there’s a reason Boehner isn’t the speaker of the House anymore.
Appearing on “The Laura Ingraham Show,” Fiorina was pressed by the host on how Cruz could trust members of the GOP establishment after winning their support — particularly former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Sen. Marco Rubio, who has thus far declined to endorse him, pointing out Boehner’s criticism.
“First of all, the fact that John Boehner doesn’t very much like Ted Cruz is all the evidence you need that Ted Cruz has fought the system,” Fiorina told Ingraham. “John Boehner was the system. Maybe it’s why he’s not speaker of the House anymore.”
“It’s important if you’re going to fight the system that your’e prepared to make some enemies. I don’t think it’s a question of Ted Cruz trusting the establishment. I think it’s a question of the fact that we do need to unify the party. That is what Donald Trump claims he’s going to do one of these days,” Fiorina continued. “So I think what Ted Cruz is doing is unifying the party. But make no mistake … unlike Donald Trump, Ted Cruz doesn’t change his mind about his positions. The positions he’s holding today are precisely the same positions he held when he was running for the Senate in Texas.”
Fiorina was responding to comments Boehner made about Cruz during a conversation at Stanford University Wednesday night, which he made when asked for “frank” thoughts on the candidates and the race as a whole.
“Lucifer in the flesh,” Boehner said. “I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life.”
