Democrats call out their own to hold racists accountable, unlike “MAGA” Republicans, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday.
Asked whether or not members of the Los Angeles City Council who were caught making racist remarks should resign, Jean-Pierre said yes, then added that her response differentiates President Joe Biden from GOP leaders.
LA CITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT RESIGNS IN WAKE OF LEAKED AUDIO FEATURING RACIST REMARKS
“The president is glad to see that one of the participants in that conversation has resigned, but they all should,” Jean-Pierre said. “[Biden] believes that they all should resign. The language that was used and tolerated during that conversation was unacceptable.”
LA City Council President Nury Martinez announced her resignation as president on Monday amid mounting backlash over leaked audio that featured her making racist remarks.
A cacophony of voices, including fellow members of the city council, had prodded her to resign after she was caught on tape disparaging the black child of a white council member as “ese changuito,” which translates to “that little monkey,” among other racist remarks.
Martinez’s remarks came during a conversation with Councilmen Kevin de Leon and Gil Cedillo, as well as Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera, in October 2021. Leaked audio from the conversation surfaced on Reddit on Sunday and created a political firestorm.
At one point in the conversation, she was heard bashing Councilman Mike Bonin’s black son in Spanish, insisting that “this kid needs a beat down,” ABC7 reported.
“They’re raising him like a little white kid,” Martinez said in the recording, per ABC7. “I was like, this kid needs a beat down. Let me take him around the corner, and then I’ll bring him back.”
In addition to calling for everyone involved in the conversation to resign, Jean-Pierre said that doing so is one thing that separates Democrats from extreme Republicans.
“When a Democrat says something racist or antisemitic, we hold them accountable,” she said. “When a MAGA Republican says something racist or antisemitic, they are embraced by cheering crowds and become celebrated and sought after for endorsements.”
As examples, Jean-Pierre cited Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) calling Democrats “pro-crime” and saying they favor reparations for the descendants of enslaved people because “the people that do the crime are owed that.” She also mentioned Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano attacking his opponent for sending his children to a Jewish day school.

“The president used to say, and I quote the president right now, ‘Hate never goes away, it only hides,” said Jean-Pierre. “‘But lately, it’s just out in the open at these extreme MAGA rallies.'”
