The sheriff of Florida’s Lee County gave a Saturday update on the county’s death toll from the Emergency Operations Center following Hurricane Ian.
Sheriff Carmine Marceno confirmed in a Facebook video post that over 600 to 700 rescues occurred in the county for those who were in need. Meanwhile, the area is reporting that there have been at least 35 deaths.
“It’s with a heavy heart that I say that number,” Marceno said.

Marceno went on to express his thanks for the cooperation he has seen from Gov. Ron DeSantis, Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis, and various county officials. The sheriff also confirmed Florida Power and Light, an electronic services company, is hard at work attempting to restore power.
The Lee County sheriff said it was an “all hands on deck” situation in the area.

Marceno has previously predicted that deaths could be in the hundreds. He, along with other county officials, shared early reports with President Joe Biden.
“This could be the deadliest hurricane in Florida’s history,” Biden told reporters Thursday afternoon. “The numbers are still unclear, but we’re hearing early reports of what may be a substantial loss of life.”
