Gov. Andrew Cuomo told New Yorkers they could expect the coronavirus to peak in the state in 45 days.
The New York Democrat’s estimate came during a Tuesday press conference with reporters, during which he said: “We’re entering a new phase in all of this. We’ve talked about early detection, we’ve talked about testing, we talked about containment. You see those numbers are going up.”
He added: “That means you’re moving towards a mitigation phase. The concept is right: Flatten the curve, slow the spread so the healthcare system can handle it.”
Cuomo then followed up on Twitter, writing: “We’re not Democrats or Republicans—at the end of the day, we’re all Americans. This is a test of our character. New York will meet it.”

This is an extraordinary time in our history and we need to see government & people perform at their best.
We’re not Democrats or Republicans—at the end of the day, we’re all Americans.
This is a test of our character. New York will meet it.

New York saw more than 400 new cases of COVID-19 overnight, bringing its total confirmed cases to more than 1,300. The state so far has the most cases nationwide, but Washington still has more confirmed deaths from the coronavirus, 48, than the rest of the nation combined.
By Tuesday afternoon, the United States reached more than 5,000 confirmed cases of the virus, with every state being affected so far except West Virginia.
