The weekend has just ended, but it’s not too soon to plan for the next. And this coming weekend will take some planning if using Metro.
The transit agency has major track work scheduled for Columbus Day weekend and plans to shut down three busy stations on the Yellow and Green lines plus suspend service between two stations on the Orange line for Friday night, Saturday, Sunday — and Monday, when many people need to get to work.
Metro will be closing Shaw, U Street and Columbia Heights stations on the Yellow/Green lines from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Tuesday. It will also be shutting down service between East Falls Church and West Falls Church for the work on the Dulles Rail project during that time.
Riders will be able to take free shuttle buses between the affected stations, according to Metro. But they should add on about 30 minutes to their expected travel times, the agency warns.
Separately, the agency is planning to force trains to share a single track in several areas this week during midday or late night hours in the following locations:
Red Line
10 a.m. through 2 p.m. Monday through Friday
- Red Line single tracking between New York Ave. and Rhode Island Ave
- Every other Red Line train traveling in the direction of Silver Spring will terminate at New York Ave. and return to Shady Grove.
10 p.m. through closing Monday through Thursday
- Red Line single tracking between Friendship Heights and Grosvenor
- Red Line single tracking between Takoma and Forest Glen
Orange Line
10 a.m. through 2 p.m. Monday through Friday
- Orange Line single tracking between Vienna and West Falls Church
Blue Line
10 p.m. through closing Monday through Thursday
- Blue Line single tracking between Stadium-Armory and Addison Road
Green/Yellow Line
