President Trump warned Republicans who oppose “border security and the wall” that they are putting themselves at risk politically, making a tacit threat against the 13 GOP House members who voted to revoke his national emergency declaration to direct military funding toward a border wall.
“I think that really it’s a very dangerous things for people to be voting against border security for anybody, including Republicans,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity. “I really think that Republicans that vote against border security and the wall, I think you know, I’ve been okay at predicting things, I think they put themselves at great jeopardy.”
The House passed a joint resolution by a margin of 245-183 on Tuesday to revoke Trump’s national emergency to divert federal funds for physical barriers at the southern border. The Senate is poised to vote on the measure by mid-March, according to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
House Republicans who voted with Democrats to pass the resolution included Reps. Justin Amash of Michigan, Will Hurd of Texas, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, and Elise Stefanik of New York, among others.
After failing to get Congress on board with appropriating the full $5.7 billion he sought for a border wall project in a long-term spending bill, Trump declared a national emergency on Feb. 15 that would direct $3.6 billion from the military construction budget to construct physical barriers. Separately, $3.1 billion from other budgets that the national emergency did not call for will also be used.
