Officer involved in fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor to be fired

One of the three officers involved in the fatal March 13 shooting of Breonna Taylor will be fired.

Louisville, Kentucky, Mayor Greg Fischer announced Friday that the Louisville Metro Police Department will initiate termination proceedings against officer Brett Hankison.

“Unfortunately, due to a provision in state law that I very much would like to see changed, both the chief and I are precluded from talking about what brought us to this moment or even the timing of this decision,” the mayor said in a statement.

Taylor, a 26-year-old black emergency medical technician, was killed in her apartment after plainclothes officers entered her dwelling using a no-knock warrant as part of a narcotics investigation. Taylor’s boyfriend did not realize the officers were police and shot one of the officers in the leg. The three officers opened fire, shooting Taylor eight times. Taylor was unarmed.

The death of Taylor and later the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody late last month have sparked nationwide protests over police brutality and racial injustice.

The two other officers involved in the Taylor shooting are still on administrative reassignment.
