Newsom posts video of himself inside Fresno restaurant despite restrictions banning indoor dining

California Gov. Gavin Newsom posted a video of himself inside a restaurant in an area of the state where indoor dining is still banned in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Newsom posted a video to his TikTok account inside Fresno’s Los Amigos restaurant alongside celebrity George Lopez talking about where residents can find information about vaccine eligibility. The governor’s office denied Newsom dined in the restaurant.

Twitter users began circulating a picture of the governor in the restaurant, with trays of what appear to be food and beverages on a table in the background.

Fresno is in California’s most restrictive purple tier, which in part bans indoor dining.

A separate video posted to the restaurant’s Facebook page shows a maskless Lopez physically embracing the restaurant’s owner while endorsing their food.

“He tried our food and he loved it!” the Los Amigos Mexican Restaurant Facebook page boasted.

Newsom was there to meet with the owners of the restaurant, who were the recipients of a relief grant, a spokesperson said of the visit.

The video comes after Newsom’s controversial decision to dine with a large group at the upscale French Laundry in November, despite his guidance against gatherings and indoor dining.

“I should have stood up and … drove back to my house … The spirit of what I’m preaching all the time was contradicted,” Newsom said of that incident. “I need to preach and practice, not just preach.”

The controversy helped ignite an effort to recall the governor, which has since gathered 1.825 million of the required 1.5 million signatures needed by March 17.

“Gavin Newsom continues to show that he’s nothing but an incompetent elitist who could care less about California families,” said a spokesperson for Newsom’s potential competitor in a recall election, Kevin Faulconer. “His failures have crippled our state’s economy and upended the lives of millions of families. We’re going to recall him and begin a California comeback to get our state on track.”
